Description

About this certification:

Batteries are the fastest growing storage technology and a key enabler of a low-carbon economy. This necessitates rapid development and investment in industries that in turn are creating skill gaps across the battery value chain.

The Battery Storage Basics course is, as the title suggests, an introduction to battery technologies and its current uses. The course equips participants with the core knowledge, key insights, and understanding of battery technologies, its importance and working principles. Participants will evaluate the historical importance of batteries, explore their core components and parameters, and learn how and where batteries fit in the energy system.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the current and historical importance of batteries
  • List the components of any generic electrochemical cell and battery system and describe its functionality
  • List basic specifications of a battery from cell specifications and a particular series-parallel arrangement
  • Describe common considerations when selecting a battery
  • Summarize current battery technologies in terms of working principles, main characteristics, advantages, and limitations

Course structure:

The course consists of two modules and is structured as follows:

Module 1

  • Develop a deeper understanding of battery technologies;
  • Discover the value of batteries, not only in daily life, but also in the development of a low-carbon society; and
  • Explore the structure and design of a battery to understand its main components and basic operation.

Module 2

  • Learn about the battery technologies that are currently in use;
  • Discover its key characteristics, advantages, and limitations; and
  • Explore the main applications of batteries.
